Party Crash - The Worst Person in the world |
"The Worst Person in the World" is a brilliant romantic drama that challenges our assumptions about what it means to be human. What is the point of living? Is life important? After all, it's absurd to think of every breathing phenomenon as a living being. This film's 'romance' is focused on a female protagonist who is on her way to discovering life's wonders.
Julie (Renate Reinsve) is a woman in her twenties who is doing her best to adapt to various jobs that she hopes will be her destiny. She navigates love affairs and existential ambiguity over the course of four years as she begins to figure out who she wants to be.She switches from one love to another throughout her journey.
Julie running back to Aksel - The Worst Person in the world |
There are few spoilers ahead(not so much that the plot would be ruined). Except for the prologue and epilogue, the film is divided into 12 chapters. Julie is presented as a medical student in Oslo who, although being the best in her class, thinks surgery to be a tedious job akin to carpentry. So one day she gets an epiphany and decides to pursue psychology, which she believes would allow her to learn more about people. She breaks up with her boyfriend and eventually falls in a short term love affair with a professor who teaches her psychology as a result of this pursuit.
In addition, as she scrolls through her photo feed on her phone, her interest in psychology fades and is replaced by a desire to be a photographer. She meets Aksel Willman, an acclaimed comic artist fifteen years her senior, while out with a model for whom she was taking photos. She finds him to be an engaging conversation starter right away and attempts to initiate a relationship with him. She develops a growing attraction to him as he warns her that staying with him for too long will cause him to fall in love with her, and her age difference will cause her to hate him later.
One day after attending a book event of Aksel, Julie crashes to a party where she meets Elvind , a barrister who already had a girlfriend. She continues to flirt with him, and the two end up spending the entire night doing various intimate stunts without cheating on their partners. They then swap names and decide not to meet again.
They do, however, re-convene. This is the point at which the story departs significantly from the norm. The story develops into an incredible journey through life's true hues. This is where I'd like to leave you for the time being so you can explore Joachim Trier's beautifully crafted novel. Please leave a comment on this page with your thoughts on the film.
